Mirrors of tunes Empty
PostSubject: Mirrors of tunes   Mirrors of tunes EmptyFri 9 Jul 2010 - 23:47

In another forum someone mentioned attending a steve Coleman workshop where ' all the things you are ' was literally turned on it's head and someone sat in on piano spending the time to try to do this exercise. This sounds really wonderful however the method wasn't elaborated upon in the other forum post . Having read the essay on symetry I'm guessing that the melody would start from it's voice relation to the chord at that given moment and move in the opposite direction ( of original melody )by the same distance and conversely so would the chords? As far as the chords' construction I'm assuming it could get messy. Would the chord be able to be voiced any way as long as it had the correct pitch inventory based on it's diatonic construction provided the intervals therein have been mirrored correctly?
Eg: melody Ab then to Eb. And during the first bar where we would have Fmn7 we would have B natural (Cb) - the root of the chord , Ab the melody note and minor 3rd below for this chord , E (Fb) the perfect 5th below of this chord and Db the dom 7 of this chord ( roughly an E major add 6? Type chord ( enharmonically incorrect, of course)? Then for the next measure this same type of chord with the root in Gb while it's '3rd' Eb is the melody ?
Hopefully my question is clear and thanks for your time.

Actually, the melody is (first eight measures)

Melody (without rhythm):

Eb | Bb Eb | E | E B E | F# | F# C# F#| G | |

Chords:

Cbmaj6 | Gbmaj6 | Dbmin6 | Abmin | Ebmin | Dmaj6 Amin6 | Emin | Emin |

etc...

However, this is just written out in 'regular' notation. These same chords are actually conceived as a kind of 'negative' harmonic progression:

Chords (negative perspective):

-Gbmin7 | -Dbmin7 | -Ab7 | -Ebmaj | -Bbmaj | -Amin7 -E7 | -Bmaj | -Bmaj |

etc...

Using this negative perspective, you can see that the melody has the exact same relationship to the chords as in the original version.
